Unleash Gemini in Gmail: The 2-Minute Setup

Google just added Gemini inside Gmail, and it’s more useful than most people think. In a few minutes, you can search your inbox with plain English, draft replies using the thread’s context, and quickly adjust tone and length.

Check subscription

Make sure you’re using a Google Workspace account or an “AI Pro” personal account.

Adjust Gmail settings

Go to Gmail. Tap Settings (top right). Make sure “smart features” are enabled among the available options.

Use Ask Gemini to search

Press “Ask Gemini” next to Settings and ask it questions about what’s in your email.

Example prompts:

  • “Show me the emails about my upcoming invoices.”
  • “Find messages related to the event invite I got this week.”

Start draft

Enter any email draft. Use one of these to trigger Gemini:

  • Option + H (Mac)
  • Alt + H (Windows)

Or tap “Help me write

Let it write using context

Tell Gemini what you want the email to say, and it will draft it based on the existing thread or draft.

Example prompts:

  • “Write a polite reply asking for a quick update and a fresh timeline.”
  • “Draft a short thank-you note and confirm I’ll follow up tomorrow.”

Regenerate tone and length

After Gemini writes a reply:

  • Tap “Recreate” to regenerate it
  • Press “Refine” to change the tone or length
